What to wear {Wardrobe Wednesday}

Posted in Children’s portraits, Wardrobe Wednesdays

Just when I’m almost fully recovered from my Christmas cookie coma, the stores start stocking gigantic displays of Valentine’s Day candy. How silly of them to think I need incentive to indulge in a little chocolate!

This week, Wardrobe Wednesday contributor Jennifer has put together some great looks for Valentine’s photos, which are great for making personal cards for your little ones to hand out to friends at school — or for you to give to your co-workers! (A great excuse to show off your adorable kiddos, right?)

And, while we’re at it, I’m excited to announce that our Wardrobe Wednesday updates just got a new look! Check it out below and let me know what you think.

Here’s what Jennifer has to say:

Okay, I admit, I haven’t even taken down my Christmas tree yet! I know, I need to get with it because before I know it, I’m going to get a note in my daughter’s folder giving me all the fun info for her class Valentine’s Day party. It’s hard to believe it’s only a month away.

If you’re a little more prepared than I am, you still have time to plan an adorably unique photo shoot to make some cards that all of your kiddo’s friends will be excited to show off. The great thing about Valentine pictures is that they can get away with being very casual. Since these are cards that will be given to their friends, let them show their personality. You can make a simple T-shirt dressier with a  tulle skirt or a little more casual with a jean skirt and leggings. Let your son show his wild side for all the girls, or how put-together he is.

This is also the perfect time to find some adorable props to add. Instead of buying real roses with thorns, you can find a bouquet of fake roses at a craft store, and all of the other items are easily found at Walmart or your local grocery store. Most kids will love the opportunity to eat chocolate or lick lollipops while being photographed, and the younger kiddos will find it hard to resist squeezing a new teddy bear!

Shopping Guide:

Girl outfit and accessories – The Gap

Boy outfit – The Children’s Place

All props can be found at Walmart, but these were found on the web:

Lollipops – Melville Store

Teddy bear – Target

Chocolates – Sees

Rose bouquet – Walmart

Winter Outerwear Guide Part II! This week, Wardrobe Wednesday contributor Rebecca of Rebecca Keeling Studios in Virginia offers more tips for dressing warmly during those beautiful snowy portrait sessions. And if you’ve been enjoying my latest series about how to dress for your body type, you’re gonna love this!

Here’s what Rebecca has to say:

In the spirit of the wintry cold and snowy weather season upon us, we thought it would be a great idea to continue our outerwear theme from last week and take it one step farther, just for us girls.  You see, when dressing for your outdoor portrait session, outerwear is essential.  Think of it as an extension of your outfit, not as an afterthought!  To do this successfully, we must consider the same rules for dressing our individual body type, about which Kelly has been educating us with her exciting and insightful series of posts!  Keeping these rules in mind will not only help you find the perfect outerwear for your session, it will make you look FAB!  And really, isn’t that why we’re here?

Pear Shaped
1. Define your shoulders!
2. Draw attention to the upper body with cute neckline detailing.
3. Belted styles help define waist.
4. Hemline just above the knee.

Hourglass Shaped
1. Fitted or tailored styles are best.
2. Cinched waists to show off those curves!
3. Wrap jackets or deeper v-necks for full busts.
4. Hemline just above or just below the rear.

Apple Shaped
1. Look for single breasted, structured jackets.
2. Belted styles help define waist.
3. Wear outerwear open to “lengthen” your body.
4. Hemline should be mid-thigh.

Rectangle Shaped
1. All about creating the illusion of curves!
2. Wear outerwear with cinched waists that flare out to the hip.

Small town Christmas parades….

Small town Christmas parades….

What a busy weekend! Fun was had by all-well, most of us anyway. Peyton, along with the rest of the GC Middle School band played/marched in the 2 parades held in Greene County this past weekend.  The Snow Hill parade was on Saturday and the Walstonburg parade was on Sunday. This was the first time several of the members actually marched and played at the same time. They did a great job. We got loads of candy since we knew almost everyone in the parade who was throwing out the candy. Mason and Ryder went to the parade on Sunday to see their brother march. Thanks guys. It was either the parade or the concert, so they both chose the parade-imagine that.  This weekend brings back memories of the first Scuffleton Christmas parade which was held in 1984, the year Shea and I were married.  Hwy 903 was blocked by the GC Police Department-lol. Nana led the McLawhorn family in making a float. Family members, along with the families’ bull dogs: if I remember correctly, there were about 6 bull dogs(English, Pit, Old Large Pit) on the float and the big sign on the side read, “HAVE A DOG-GONE GOOD CHRISTMAS”. So much fun. Watch out next year you may see a McLawhorn Family/Triple M Farms float……………

Tis the season……….Brad & Melissa

Melissa wanted a few pictures for Christmas cards. So, this past weekend, I met Melissa and her husband, Brad at their home for a photo session. Somehow, even with three busy schedules we were able to get together for about 45 minutes. Melissa is a busy lady. Joining us for the shoot were Abbie and Izzie, their two Goldens who were more well-behaved than some children I know. We ended up with some great shots, as you will see below. Thanks Melissa and Brad-you two make a beautiful couple…

WHAT TO WEAR FOR A BARGAIN!    WARDROBE WEDNESDAY
I am so excited to share this week’s Wardrobe Wednesday post! Contributor Jennifer Minor of Minor Impressions Photography in Texas was given the challenge to dress a family of six as inexpensively as possible. I know budgets are tight this time of year, but you can still get great style at a great price for those annual holiday portraits.
Here’s what Jennifer has to say:
I have to admit, every time I do my post for Wardrobe Wednesday, I go to different stores looking for cute outfits and accessories with hardly a care about looking at the price tag on each item. It sure is fun (and easy) to “cyber shop” when you know that bill really isn’t going to hit your pocket book. But, let’s be reasonable here, good custom photography doesn’t come cheap, and times are tough for many of us lately — especially if we have kids. So I was given a challenge to find a great ensemble for family portraits that comes only from the most-known discount store, Wal-Mart.
While conducting my search, I found that one of the best things about Wal-Mart apparel is that many times they come in sets or with coordinating accessories. For example, check out the Toddler Girl’s top. Not only does it come with the shirt, but it also has a blazer and scarf to match. All of this for only $10. YES, I said $10. Okay, I’ll admit, this is on clearance, but when this was regular price, it was only $12 – it doesn’t get much better than that! I even found hair accessories that had multiple pieces, so not only could the toddler girl use the bow, but the teenage girl could use the clips, as well!
I’ve listed a few important points below to help you save money on your fabulous wardrobe so your budget can be put more toward purchasing those fabulous portraits!!
• Plan ahead. Pick out the one item you really want everything else to coordinate with and scour the ads in your Sunday paper. Go to the stores to check out each item and watch for them to go on sale.
• Purchase items that have a coordinating accessory. Many times this can save you at least $10 for an outfit.
• Don’t worry about purchasing new jeans. If they don’t have spots and look good, why spend $50 or more for a new pair?
• Use accessories you already have at home. I know it’s fun to go out and splurge on a new wardrobe for pictures (and if you have the money for it, great), but if you have to be a little more conscious about where your pennies are going, then it doesn’t hurt to reuse some of “last year’s” accessories.
• Check out your local thrift stores. Often times, you can find some funky clothes, a great hat, scarf and especially cool jewelry.
• Borrow from a friend. If you love their fun jacket, fancy boots or that perfect set of earrings, a portrait session is the perfect reason to ask! Besides, it’s an awesome compliment that you would want them in your special pictures.
You can find all of the awesome items below at Walmart.com. For the entire family-of-six ensemble, you would spend only $276.67! But if you take away the pants and shoes, which most people have already, it is only $110.77!

I love the convenience of online shopping.  Sitting back in your own home  viewing several different stores at one time instead of running from store to store wondering if it’s going to match…

Well, for this week’s Wardrobe Wednesday, Rebecca of Rebecca Keeling Studios is spotlighting a great site that makes your online shopping experience even more fun!

Here’s what Rebecca has to say:

sorry guys, but sometimes it IS all about the girls.  what’s that age-old saying?  “if momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!”  well, the same holds true when it comes to family photographs.  it’s a BIG event, and even though dad and the kids get to throw on their outfits and just make it to the car in the knick of time, mom has probably put countless hours planning, preparing and pulling-off this well-orchestrated event.  and after it’s all over, who is the person who proofs, chooses and orders the family photos?  probably mom!!  so i think it’s only fitting that mom takes center stage when starting to coordinate the family wardrobe, and build everyone else’s outfits around her.

where to start, you ask??

HHEELLLLOOOOOOO piperlime!!  you may remember piperlime from back in the day, when they first started out just selling shoes.  i LOVED getting boxes from them…it was like getting two gifts in one because they had the GREATEST packaging…and i am ALL about the details!  they had cool green boxes and tissue paper with little limes on it.  so cool!!  NOW, not only do they still do shoes, but they also have a fabulous selection of hip, stylish and affordable clothing for women.

there is SO much to see on the piperlime site.  under the women’s section, there are “headlines” and “top trends” sections to keep you in-the-know for the latest seasonal fashions.  but, my absolute MOST favorite thing about piperlime, other than their FAB clothing/shoes/accessories, is the “style it your way” feature.  it can be a little tricky to find at first…you have to check out the scrolling colored bars at the top of the page, but it’s well worth the look!!  with the “style it your way” feature, you can choose from a variety of the latest tops, bottoms, outerwear, shoes and accessories to create your very own outfit.  not only can you select your own model, you can even select the background that you would like to see your outfit paired with!!  having your family photo session in your home?  got it!  urban location?  done!  flowers/trees/grass?  yep!  AND…they even have a fall foliage background!!  BONUS!!

even if you don’t find exactly what you want in the wardrobe selections, it’s an invaluable tool to see the outfit while getting ideas on color and textures.  fall is a great time to start layering your wardrobe and sometimes it can be a tricky process.  the “style it your way” feature lets you do that, and more!  tuck or untuck your jeans into your boots, tuck or untuck your shirt, open or close your jacket or cardigan…the possibilities are limitless!

after you whip up your wardrobe, you can save your “look” for future reference, and you can even share your “look” on facebook if you want feedback from your friends!  and since piperlime is owned by the same company as banana republic, gap, and old navy, their handy links are right at the top of the page, so you can head over to their stores to complete the outfits for your family!  so get going…after all, shopping for your family portrait session should be half of the fun!
